My Halloweens were always ridiculously fun -- after all, my birthday was only two days before! It was a big holiday at my house and a common birthday theme, so I came away with a few good ideas for my own Halloweens. And with Halloween right around the corner, houses everywhere are putting up decorations and readying the candy bowl! Still, for the first time Halloween decorator, it can seem a larger task than you expected. The following are some ideas for a particularly fun haunted house that kids will love and you will enjoy setting up -- and running! Some of the ideas are very traditional, some are not, but all are a blast. * Spiderwebs - The first thing you'll want to set up are your spiderwebs. On your porch and in your foyer (or just around the door if you have neither), lace store-bought spiderwebbing in as much abundance as possible. If you have a small lamp, place a colored bulb in it and shine it on one of the webbings -- it will glow eerily! * Halloween Soundtrack - You can buy these anywhere, even online! Play it on repeat all night long for some ghoulish ambiance. * Tattered Rope - A long, frayed noose swaying from a tree (or a pole, or wherever a noose can go) just begs for a creepy story! Set one up and prepare to embellish about the greedy little candy grabber or the terrible murderer who now haunts your yard. * Old Witch - If you have kids, this is a great activity for them as well. Gather some old black fabric and make a big square. Buy a witch's hat from any store, and use paper mache techniques to create the head (over a ball of some kind). Once dry, paint the face as you like and add some hair (yarn, strings, whatever!). Attach everything properly (her dress, her head, and the hat) and hang her wherever you please. * Traditional Decor - Naturally, you'll want pumpkins and cutouts of skeletons -- anything you find on sale is probably the best bet. Cauldrons are always fun (and can go with your witch!). * Bowls of body parts - The traditional layout is peeled grapes for eyes and spaghetti for brains, but feel free to get creative! Peeled stewed tomatoes feel a little like hearts or other slimy organs. Wet yarn is disgusting and feels a little like hair -- or you can use corn silk; wet tends to be creepier. Thinned ketchup (have some wetnaps handy) for blood will certainly creep the kids out. Some of the body parts will need to be hidden (have the kids reach a hand in), but keep a latex glove full of red Jell-O out in plain view. Dried fruit works great for ears and a rinsed off pickle is a really bumpy nose! Set these up in your yard or on your porch and have the kids file past in a line. * Candy Station - It's probably best to have one adult in charge of doling out the candy, or the kids might take a little more than they can really handle. At the end of your little line (either in the yard or just at the door), include the candy bowl and one big final scary boo! With these ideas, hopefully your Halloween will be just as scary and exciting as those of your childhood. There are thousands of ways to do up a good haunted house for trick-or-treaters; all you have to do is get a little creative. |
